RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERSHIP

The goal of the WOHS programs is to help all students grow athletically, emotionally, physically, and socially through performance in band and color guard. Our expectation is that our students should demonstrate respect at all rehearsals and competitions, and represent West Orange High School with pride. We expect that all students will display a sincere commitment to the program by regular attendance to practices and contests as well as following established school rules set forth by the district and coaches. Responsibilities • The expectation is that the student must maximize efforts in achieving academic potential. A grade point average of a "C" and above is required for participation. • Student must abide by all school policies and maintain good citizen status with the community. • Students are responsible for completing all school work regardless of team commitments. • Students may not wear WOHS property outside of the realm of activities without the consent of the coach. • All uniforms and equipment will be returned at the end of the season to coaching staff. Failure to return or make financial restitution for equipment will result in the withholding of report cards, diplomas or possible participation in school activities. Students who miss practices for an extended period of time, excused or unexcused, may not participate in activities/performances until approved by the coach. • Injured students are expected to attend practices and performances unless physically unable to do so. • It is the policy of WOHS that all students shall travel to and from competitions not held at WOHS with the team and coaches on transportation provided by the West Orange Board of Education. Exception to this policy may only be made at the discretion of the coaches and/or band directors upon prior written request of the students' parent or guardian.

CODE OF CONDUCT (Please refer to full text of policy below)

Students represent WOHS at all times and are expected to display appropriate conduct in and out of school. • It is expected that students will not engage in altercations of any kind. • Any student receiving disciplinary action with a recommendation for long-term suspension or expulsion will immediately be suspended for participation in any school sponsored program. • Any student charged with a felony offense may be suspended from the team. • WOHS will not tolerate hazing or bullying of any kind. Students who disregard this rule are subject to suspension from school as well as possible suspension or termination from the team as set forth in the student handbook. Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Policy • Students are expected to be drug-free. Possession and/or use of any substance will result in suspension and possible dismissal from the team. (In accordance with the WOHS student handbook) All students will refrain from the use of tobacco. Any students violating this policy will minimally face suspension from the team

ATTENDANCE POLICY (Please refer to full text of policy below)

Participation and Attendance All members of the co-curricular ensembles are expected to be present at all the rehearsals for their respective groups, all of which can be found on the West Orange High School Band calendar online at wohsmusic.org. A student must communicate with the directors about attendance. Absence from rehearsals is only acceptable due to illness, family death or emergency, religious holiday, or, in some cases, school sporting events. You are expected to be present at rehearsal every day you are present in school. If you are ill and absent from school you do not attend rehearsal that day. If the nurse sends a student home from school due to illness, you do not attend rehearsals that day. On the weekends, communicate with the directors via email about any illness that may arise. Students missing rehearsals for any other reason will be removed from the ensemble. Academic Excellence Students in co-curricular ensembles are expected to: Set academic goals Manage their time effectively Study every day and take notes in class Complete all work on time Behavior and Attitude Students in co-curricular ensembles are expected to show respect for each other and their directors and a positive attitude by being on time, working hard, and putting the group ahead of the individual. If at any time a student is not fulfilling these expectations, he or she will be removed from the ensemble. Commitment and Time Management Members of co-curricular ensembles must be aware of the extra time responsibilities, including travel to festivals, concerts, extra rehearsals after school, during the evening, and weekend, and any fundraising expectations. Members of co-curricular ensembles have a serious obligation to be at every performance. Only in an extreme circumstance would missing a performance be acceptable. NOTE Special situations will be dealt with on an individual basis. All final decisions will be made by the directors. Any unexcused absence from rehearsals will jeopardize YOUR participation in upcoming performances AT THE DISCRETION OF THE DIRECTORS. Excessive absenteeism may result in your dismissal from the ensemble at the discretion of the directors.

PERMISSION TO PARTICIPATE AND WAIVER OF CLAIM

We the parents and/or legal guardians of the above-named student, hereby consent to his/her participation in band and/or color guard.-I/we will be responsible for any equipment loaned to my child by the school and will reimburse the school for any loss.-I/we give permission to the rendering of such first aid or athletic trainer services or team trainer of any member of the Board of Education Staff may render to the student in case of injury. -I/we understand that in case of injury to my child, all medical bills will be submitted to my/our insurance company first.
